Teachers play a critical role in ensuring kids' mental health is protected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
FREMONT, CA: As adults, people have unique demands and coping mechanisms for stressful situations. It is the same for children. Certain youngsters will have fared well under the COVID-19 pandemic's restrictions and school closures. For some, coping with all the changes and uncertainties is difficult. Certain children will return to school after experiencing varying degrees of stress, anxiety, isolation, and sadness. Some may have witnessed an increase in domestic violence.
Teachers and staff play a key role in assisting students' service and well-being with their transition to in-person classroom instruction, especially following extended periods of school closure. Along with continuing to employ the various skills instructors have used to assure their kids' academic and emotional well-being while schools were closed, the following suggestions may be beneficial when schools reopen:
Take note of students’ concerns: COVID-19 and school closures negatively influence the mental health and well-being of a large number of children and adolescents. Teachers must listen to kids' problems and display both understanding and empathy. Pupils must speak with their teachers one-on-one to reconnect and discuss any concerns that may have emerged while their school was closed. If a youngster communicates something troubling, teachers must adhere to the protection or child safeguarding procedures in place.
Monitor the students’ progress: Before beginning to teach new academic content to students, teachers and school administrators should assess students' progress. Children must take time to rest, walkabout, and reconnect with their friends and peers. Teachers must bear in mind if children have difficulties concentrating at first or require more time to re-establish their learning habits.
Encourage play and sports to foster student connection: In many nations, children have been prohibited from utilizing playgrounds and other public venues to play and connect with their peers. As long as school safety standards are followed, ensure that when children return to school, they have many opportunities to mingle, play, and interact with the friends they have missed for so long.
Set an example for pupils by remaining calm, honest, and caring: Teachers have the opportunity to serve as excellent role models for their kids. Children will observe their teachers and pick up on the coping mechanisms regularly to deal with difficult events. They must maintain a calm, honest, and caring demeanor around youngsters.
